We chose to include the word Honor in our new farm's name on purpose. The intent of the farm has been, and continues to be to celebrate and honor:
Our farm stand was designed to accommodate many farmers, not just what is cultivated at Honor Grown Farm. Dozens of vendors - from herb plant growers to canned goods producers - have their products for sale on our stand. We are excited to have partnered with those in our community who agree that this farm stand represents crops and goods locally grown or made. In addition, local farmers have plants, tools and even heaters for sale that, whether new or used, are handy for those who enjoy gardening.
Central Florida has historically been farmed for citrus, but in recent years a disease commonly referred to as "Greening" has devastated most farms - including the one we inherited. We have since replaced over 250 trees with new citrus, supplementing the original tangerine groves with many other fruit varieties that thrive in this plant zone. We are also enamored by Native American culture and what was grown in Central Florida historically. To that end, several of the species of native plants (including Chinquapin, ginger, loquat and Coontie plants) are abundant on our farm.
My very first job, at 14 years old, was at a busy farm stand in Illinois. http://prev.dailyherald.com/story/?id=279435 Well past, the lessons of Ethel Dahm and "Ethel's" nevertheless left a lasting influence for my passion of sharing lovingly-grown produce.
Moe and I both grew up as home gardeners, nurturing produce in much colder climates (Connie in Chicago and Boston, Moe in Maine) but never considered ourselves farmers until we moved here and a dear friend helped navigate the tricks of Central Florida farming. We have much to learn, but we keep our hearts open and our hands in the soil.
Thank you to Dick who gifted us the rolling "cradle" for our first produce stand ... and thank you to Patrick who patiently listened and designed the logo which speaks to our farm's vision.
It is nearly impossible to get a farm certified organic and we are too small to try. However, be assured that when opportunity presents itself, we purchase organic seed (usually from a reputable company like https://www.johnnyseeds.com
Cognizant of the devastating long-term effect of pesticides we are proud to boast that we do not use pesticides anywhere on our property. We do subscribe to the practice of feeding our plants with an abundance of minerals and nutrients to offset the nutrient-barren sandy soils.
Please know that we hope to be busy in our beds - weeding (so much weeds!), planting and picking. While we may not physically man the stand during open hours we plan to use the Honor System, trusting that our customers will leave the appropriate monies for the produce they choose ... or ring the camera chime at the stand. We look forward to meeting you!
